Kiln Firings

Please read all the information.

We do bisque firings and glaze firings twice each week. We fire pieces in the order that we receive them. Generally, pieces dropped off at the studio for firing are finished in four days to two weeks. No appointment needed.

In order to properly fire your pieces, please make sure:

  • You know what Cone (temperature) your clay needs to be fired to

  • You know what Cone (temperature) your glaze needs to be fired to

  • Each of your pieces is marked with a stamp or logo that indicates its your piece.

    Bisque fire: Cone 04 & 06

When bisque firing your pieces, they need to be bone dry. If you drop them off to be fired and they are not bone dry, we will let them dry by air until they are ready to be put in the kiln. If you use underglazes, please let the assistant know the brand and kind you used. Some underglazes can’t touch each other and we stack all of our pieces in a bisque kiln.

Glaze fire: Cone 6

We require that you leave 1/4 inch unglazed clay at the base of your pieces and have the bottom completely clean of glaze. Make sure the glaze you are using pertains to the correct cone you are firing at. Most commercial glazes will tell you on the label. We do our glaze fires at Cone 6, so your glaze needs to be a Cone 5 or Cone 6 glaze. Cone 06 is NOT the same as cone 6.

Kiln Shelves

We highly encourage you to not use running glazes. If you don’t know or are unsure if your glazes run, please bring “kiln cookies” or “kiln coasters” to use under your pieces (They are flat coasters that have been fired but have NO glaze on them). If your glazes run and stick to the kiln shelves, you will be charged up to the price of a kiln shelf ($40) and will most likely lose your piece due to it breaking.

If you are looking to fire at a different temperature, you will be required to pay the full kiln. Our kiln range is Cone 020- Cone 6.
